Free delivery vs. Prime delivery: what is the difference?
Amazon shows different delivery labels depending on your membership status, the item, and your location. Here is what each type usually means — and when neither applies.
Two different things that look similar
Amazon displays several variations of 'free' or 'fast' delivery on product pages, and the differences between them matter. Understanding which type applies to your situation helps you predict your actual checkout cost more accurately.
Prime delivery
Prime delivery is a membership benefit. Amazon Prime members in eligible countries receive faster shipping — often one or two days — on qualifying items at no extra per-shipment cost. The speed and availability of Prime delivery varies by country; what is standard two-day delivery in the US may be a different guarantee in other markets.
Prime delivery requires an active Prime membership and applies only to items marked as Prime-eligible. If you are not a Prime member, or if the item is not Prime-eligible, Prime delivery does not apply regardless of what you see on the product page when browsing.
Free delivery without Prime
Amazon also offers free delivery to non-Prime customers under specific conditions. The most common is a minimum order threshold: 'FREE delivery on orders over $X of eligible items.' This type of free delivery is available to any customer who meets the cart eligibility criteria, regardless of Prime membership.
Other free delivery offers may come from specific third-party sellers who offer free shipping as part of their own pricing strategy. In this case, the free delivery applies to that seller's items and may have its own conditions.
When both conditions apply — and when neither does
If you are a Prime member and your item qualifies, you may see both Prime fast delivery and free delivery options. In this case, Prime delivery is typically faster even if both are shown as free.
If you are not a Prime member and your cart eligible subtotal is below the free delivery threshold, you will likely pay shipping. If an item is sold by a third-party seller who does not offer free shipping to your country, neither Prime delivery nor threshold-based free delivery will apply.
For international shoppers
Prime delivery benefits vary significantly by country. A Prime membership in one Amazon marketplace does not automatically grant Prime delivery from a different Amazon marketplace. International shoppers using amazon.com from outside the US, for example, may see standard international shipping costs rather than Prime delivery benefits even with an active membership.
Always set your delivery address correctly before browsing and confirm the delivery options and costs at checkout. Final price, shipping, import fees, and delivery eligibility must be confirmed on Amazon before any purchase.
